Social Support as Fuel

Picture yourself at your worst.

The stress is ever-increasing, the commitments are rampant, and the pressure feels out of control. You feel like you have reached the impossible puzzle, the gargantuan challenge, the final boss… Faced with something that has caused you anxiety for so long, you are just about to put down your sword and give up when you see a hand reach out to give you help. You take the hand, re-commit to the battle and march on. Your engine is full again.

Some of us are lucky enough to know what this feels like. The support of a friend, family member, colleague or even pet can go a long way in providing us with the fuel we need to persevere through adversity. It is, undoubtedly, one of the most outstanding achievements in life: having a true social support system.

Who Makes Up Your Support System?

Ask yourself that very question. Take a moment to think about who those people are to you. Who are those that you can rely on to lend a helping hand, listen to you vent and be there for you when the going gets tough? The true value in your life stems only from a few things, and those people are arguably the most valuable of them all. Not everyone is so lucky. Acknowledge their value, since you would not be where you are today without their support.

Appreciating Your Support System

When someone in your system does something kind for you, simply out of their own volition, it is crucial to demonstrate just how much you value their support. Most people find that it takes a lot of effort to be selfless towards others, so it is important to acknowledge and appreciate those efforts. When someone supports you, don’t just thank them. Appreciate them. A simple thank you is nothing more than a courteous formality. It shows that you are not completely blind to what they have done for you. But, to properly appreciate someone is entirely different – you explain how they made you feel, what they mean to you, and how much you value their selfless actions.

It may feel awkward at first, and it may be difficult to articulate, but life is far too short to hold back on appreciating those who deserve it. After all, you never know when you will lose the chance to show the appreciation you have kept quiet for so long.

“The strong bond of friendship is not always a balanced equation; friendship is not always about giving and taking in equal shares. Instead, friendship is grounded in a feeling that you know exactly who will be there for you when you need something, no matter what or when.” Simon Sinek
